The Scout Section

The Scout Section is for young people, usually aged between 10 years six months and 14. A young person can come into the Troop at 10 and may stay until they are 14 years six months old. The Scout Troop is the third and final Section in the Scout Group. Generally Scouts would be encouraged to move on to the Explorer Scout Section between the age of 13 years six months and 14 years six months years old. (New rules effective 1/9/09)

Scouts are encouraged to take part in a wide range of activities as part of their programme. "Participation" rather than meeting set standards is the key approach and for the Scout who wants to be recognised for his or her achievements there are a number of Challenges, Awards and Activity Badges. Scouts take part in a balanced programme that helps them to find out about the world in which they live, encourages them to know their own abilities and the importance of keeping fit, and helps develop their creative talents. It also provides opportunities to explore their own values and personal attitudes.

ADKIN CAMPING CHALLENGE WEEKEND 2010 Print E-mail
ADKIN CAMPING CHALLENGE WEEKEND 2010 The newly re-organised Adkin weekend was certainly one to remember !Undoubtedly the weather was wonderful, but so were the Scouts. At the start, teams reflected the whole range of camping experience from novice upwards but, by the end of the weekend, it was getting hard to distinguish between them. The new style of organisation allowed all teams to improve with the help of a "handy hints" sheet to refer to and advice from Leaders as and when required. The Leadership Team had prepared a challenging set of criteria, designed to accommodate all levels of achievement from the "I have been at a Camp" stage through Bronze and Silver to Gold. At the end of the camp ALL teams had achieved either Silver or Gold. The Green and Bronze Certificates and Woggles were redundant. We only just managed sufficient Silver and Gold to go round !  A really stunning achievement by all the Scouts. The usual Cooking Competition had been made optional, but all teams chose to enter. On the theme of "Traditionally English", there were 'Bangers & Mash', 'Sunday Roast' and 'Shepherd's Pie' on offer and, not surprisingly, many strawberries awash with cream. All entries were on time a nd well presented and the aromas were most enticing. Again, a superb effort, showing a range of culinary skills and proving that you don't have to be Master Chefs to produce an attractive, well-cooked meal. All Patrols enjoyed the various activities on offer. Climbing and abseiling were popular, as always, but other bases proved interesting, instructive or challenging, according to their nature. Many Scouts can now splice a rope-end, make a noose (!) and approach a 1st Aid incident with confidence !However, the most impressive aspect of the whole weekend was the friendly and positive attitude of the Scouts themselves. Gone was the intense rivalry between teams and Patrols helped each other when necessary. Food items were swapped here and there, and when one Patrol’s two tin-openers broke (!!), another Patrol stepped in with the loan of theirs. Small things in themselves, but a reflection of the true Scouting-Spirit which seemed to dominate the entire weekend. The Leadership Team was delighted with the results produced by the change of emphasis in the programme. So, Troop Leaders, why not send a Patrol next year and just watch their camping skills blossom and their confidence grow – all in one, short weekend. It really happened this year and we are certain it will again in 2011 !
