Who requires First Response?

The full requirements list is found in the POR Chapter 16 Teams Table

  • Common roles which DO require first response are:
    • Group Lead Volunteers
    • Section Team Leaders
    • Section Team Members (including those who were previously Section Assistants)
  • Common roles NOT requiring first response (unless one of the roles above are held) :
    • Trustees
    • Non-member – requires disclosure
    • Retired members, Presidents & Vice presidents
    • Group/District Leadership Team members without other roles
    • District Programme / Volunteering Team / Support Team members

I need to complete First Response training:

  • GLSW provide First Aid training, free of charge, to leaders requiring First Aid.
  • Young Leaders receive Module K training via the district young leader training scheme, or they may also attend the county training, however this will be at a cost.
  • Those who do not need First Response but would prefer to have this qualification may also take this training but this will be at a charge.

All of the GLSW courses are advertised here. If none are showing at the moment, the next term’s training has not been loaded yet, check back in a few days.

FirstAidEasy – GLSW First Aid Training

I completed a GLSW course but First Response is not showing as completed on My Learning.

  • This training has to be credited manually – and it can typically take up to a week to show up on the system.
  • Unfortunately the system is not easy to use for those crediting the account, and so occasionally learning might not save correctly.
  • If after 7 days it has not appeared on My Learning, please email firstaid@croydonscouting.org.uk with your name and membership number and this can be checked for you.
  • Do not email the course organisers. Once they have completed the course with you their responsibility ends and they cannot credit First Response on the system – this is done by the district team.

I have completed a course outside of GLSW. How can I get this credited?

External first aid courses must be validated by the County First Aid assessor as follows.

  • Complete any necessary conversion course (more on this below)
  • Upload any relevant information such as certificates and syllabuses, and any conversion course (more on this below) certificate, to the My Qualifications section of My Membership
  • Email paul.green@glswscouts.org.uk
  • (If required) the county team will arrange to complete a child and/or adult CPR assessment with you.
  • County team will notify the District team once your first aid has been approved.

Conversion courses: As Scouts’ First Response syllabus is heavily tailored towards Scouting, there are elements which are not usually covered on commercial courses. Therefore, GLSW have approved the use of the Hampshire Scouts first aid conversion courses. This is FREE e-learning – not a webinar/live course.

Does Croydon District provide grants for external training courses, or where a course is completed by someone who does not need it for their role?

Where you have, or have applied for a permit which requires a 16 hour or similar course, the standard Croydon Training Grant scheme will apply.

Otherwise, Croydon District will not provide a grant towards courses taken outside of the subsidised county provision. Your group may be able to support you, please speak to your Group Lead Volunteer.

Can I use my scout First Response training to provide EFAW cover at work.

No – the scout course is heavily tailored to scout requirements around programme and policy and does not meet the HSE’s requirements for Emergency First Aid at Work.
