Our award-winning training scheme for volunteers means that adults get as much from Scouting as our young people.
Scouting’s quality depends on its volunteers and our volunteers depend on Scouting to teach them the skills they need.
Our training scheme was recognised with a National Training Award from UK Skills. It is one of the reasons why we have managed to increase our volunteer numbers over the past few years, against the national trend.
The training scheme for new leaders is in a modular format and for the majority of leaders will consist of 18 stand alone modules.
You will need to complete the first 3 modules within 4 months of joining but the remainder can be completed in any order you wish within the next 3 years.
There are various different ways in which you can complete the required training for the modules – some can be done on line, some as workbooks, all as formal courses or as a one to one session with a trainer.
We take into account the experiences you have gained through life and work, which can mean that you do not have to complete the training part of every module.
Once you have completed the training you will need to carry out some tasks and or discuss the module with a trainer in order to validate it and show that fully you understand what the module was about.
All leaders will have access to an Adult Personal File, which explains the contents of each module and what is needed to validate it.

Once you have had all 18 modules validated you will be awarded your Wood Badge as an acknowledgement that you have completed your formal training as a leader.
Certain modules such as First Aid, Safeguarding, and On Going Safety will need to be renewed on either a 3 or 5 yearly basis.
The training is not onerous nor over scholarly, but can be fun and a chance to meet other leaders from other groups and to exchange ideas, and there will be plenty of experienced leaders who will be available to help you.
