Could you be a Croydon Scouting Trustee?

Could you be Croydon Scouting’s next Chair of Trustees?

and if not, could you join our trustees as a member of our board?

Croydon Scouting are looking for individuals with an interest in how Scouting in Croydon stays safe and compliant, ensuring our groups are funded, supported and able to grow. You don’t need experience of being a trustee, and you don’t even need to come from a scouting background.

You’ll need to be interested in working as a team and in helping Scouts in Croydon run safely, successfully and sustainably, and be passionate about our young people – ensuring Scouts lets them find places where they can belong and can learn skills for life.

What’s in it for you?
  • Having a trustee role on your CV tells employers you’re organised, passionate, community-minded and committed to good governance
  • If you haven’t held a trustee role before you’ll learn new skills and meet new people.
  • It’s a great way to volunteer in Scouts if camping or running activities isn’t for you.
  • You’ll be offered training as part of your induction.
What will you do?

As a member or the Chair of our trustee board, you’ll help make decisions which ensure we run safe activities, we manage our funds effectively and safely, we comply with laws and policies, and we’re organised to weather the challenges facing volunteering organisations in 2026. You’ll play a critical role in both challenging and encouraging our leadership team. You’ll attend 2-3 meetings each term, plus our AGM, and can get involved and find out more about local Scouting in Croydon flexibly around your other commitments.

You can find out more about being a trustee in Scouts here.

What’s the difference between the two roles?

Our trustees work as a team, and share the same legal responsibilities, but the Chair has an additional leadership role within the Trustee board.

They:

  • Lead and organise meetings
  • Set the agenda, together with the District Lead Volunteer
  • Help the board reach clear decisions
  • Ensure everyone’s voice is heard and discussions stay focused
  • Act as a key point of contact between the district trustee board, and group trustee boards
To apply to be Chair, do I need to have been a trustee before?

Not necessarily – you just need a passion for good governance, and the ability to talk to people! Our existing chair is remaining on the board of trustees and together with the rest of the trustee board will support you in coordinating and leading our Trustee Board.

How can I find out more?

We’re hoping to appoint our new Chair at our AGM on June 12th – so please get in touch no later than May 31st! We’ll ask you to chat to our selection panel (a friendly chat, not an interview!) and they will propose our next Chair and new trustees to the trustee board ahead of the AGM.

We’d love to hear from you – even if it’s just to understand a bit more about the role – so please get in touch with our Lead Volunteer, Ant Eeles, for a chat.
